Mitch Mendosa, Voices of the Valley Teacher
"When our youth and elders work together to produce something of value for many generations to come, magic happens and everyone benefits."

Leah, Sophmore
"Voices of the Valley to me is something that every little town or even city should have. Because I think when you live in a place, you should be able to know about it. If somebody asks you what your town is, you should be able to know what your history is, and Voices of the Valley is a way we can preserve the memories.

We learned interview skills, and we learned how to communicate with people and how to preserve the history of our valley. To me, I take a lot of pride in learning how to do that and being able to work with the people in my community, and people I didn’t even know. And I got to know them. And then we run into them in town the next day, they remember you, and they love the fact that they’re being included in preserving Anderson Valley’s history."

In 1997, a group of Anderson Valley Jr./Sr. High students and their teacher created Voices of the Valley. What began as a small project involving a handful of students and community elders, has blossomed into a well-articulated part of our school and community involving hundreds of students and scores of community members. Voices of the Valley publications have received local, state, and national recognition and can be found in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. The books, accompanied by audio CDs containing conversation segments, tell the stories of people who have played a part in the development of what Anderson Valley is today.
During 2003 and 2004, Voices of the Valley, in conjunction with local KZYX radio, began creating radio shows showcasing the lives and accomplishments of some of those interviewed. This web site makes these brief documentaries available to everyone by clicking here and gives information on how to purchase the complete interviews published in books and on compact discs here.

"Voices of the Valley" is an oral history project at Anderson Valley Jr./Sr. High School in Boonville, California. This school is part of the North Coast Rural Challenge Network.
