1. Brief description of the project:
Karen Santana will conduct a type of public health survey of the Native American Residence of South Coastal Mendocino County which will determine whether they feel there is a significant difference of health care available to native and non-natives and what changes they would like to see.
If there is a difference then Karen will work with the people at RCMS and at SCIHP to design a plan which will accomodate most of those needs.
2. Connections
How does the project connect with our theme of people, history, and place?
How does the project interact with the community?
How will you evaluate or assess the community impact?
How does the project connect with other NCRCN sites?
Karen will "survey the historic residence of this community to see what they want to happen in terms of their health and this survey will be conducted in a manner that will not make them feel uncomfortable. I am going to go house to house, sit down with the people and ask the questions myself. I am a resident of that community so, by knowing the people, I will attain information that RCMS has not been able to do."
"In order to accomplish this I will become a Healthy Community sub-committee board member with the RCMS (our whole focus is on creating a Healthy Community) and they will advise me on what questions will be most valuable."
3. Student Learning
How will the project improve student learning?
How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned?
What kind of data will you collect?
Will you have an Action Research question?
How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project?
How does the project invite student planning/student choice?
How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community?
Will your project have a service learning component? If so please describe.
The students of the Native American community will have access to this information, as well as their input as an important element in the survey. The data collected will be the main part of developing the Plan which will benefit the entire community.
The information collected in any part of the project will be made available to anyone in the community as well as other schools who live under similar conditions, such as the Laytonville and Covelo areas.
4. Support
What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA?
What kinds of funds will you need for the project? Please supply
a general budget. (Staff development, release time for planning, transportation, materials.)
What other sources might provide additional funding for the project?
This project will require a great deal of traveling because the reservation is split by the Garcia River and I will have to go an extra 10 miles in order to get to the side opposite from where I live. I will also need plenty of paper for all of the surveys and I will store all of the information onto a 3.5-inch diskette. The total cost coming to about $100.00. I would really appreciate any help you can offer in assisting with the cost and the BIA might be willing to help with that.
Project funding: $200.
