1. Brief description of the project:
Students will learn from local artists the techniques necessary to plan, develop and create a high quality mural that will be permanently displayed in the community. Students will meet with local artists from 2:30-4:30 p.m. every Wednesday, with possible Saturday events. A day long field trip to the Precita Heights Mural Walk in San Francisco is being planned for February.
2. Connections
- How does the project connect with our theme of people, history and place?
- How does the project interact with the community?
- How will you evaluate or assess the community impact?
- How does the project connect with other NCRCN members/sites?
This project connects students and artists together to create a beautiful mural in our community that will promote community pride, ownership, create new alliances, group accomplishment and a safer environment, and give students a sense of true belonging to this place.
We will assess the community impact by determining the benchmarks for success and evaluating its progress. So far, we have determined the following benchmarks; having dialogue in the community about the project, a substantial amount of votes in the design contest, increased interest by local artists/volunteer supervisors to participate in the project, and positive and timely coverage by the local media.
3. Student Learning
- How will the project improve student learning?
- How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned? What kind of data will you collect? Will you have an Action Research question? How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project?
- How does the project invite student planning/student choice?
- How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community?
- Will your project have a service learning component? If so please describe.
The Community Arts project will improve student learning through an intensive curriculum of arts instruction involving local artists/teachers. Students will learn the mural making process through intensive hands-on projects. Collaboration techniques, theme development, preparation, transfer and painting are included. Students will also be introduced to artworks by well-known muralists and other famous artists during our field trip to San Francisco. We will assess what students have learned by the KWL reflective process (What I Know, What I Want to Know and What I have Learned). Students will also keep a journal/log throughout the semester. The entire project is based on student choice and planning and is a service learning project.
4. Support
- What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA?
- What kinds of funds will you need for the project? (staff development, release time for planning, transportation, materials) Please supply a general budget.
- What other sources might provide additional funding for the project?
We need Ann Slattery to publicize the project in the schools, coordinate with Mr. Hughey and Mr. Hardeman for independent study credit for participants and recruit high school student participants. Ann will organize the field trip to San Francisco and obtain use of the school vans.
