Brief description of the project: The basic external structure of the community greenhouse has been completed. This project will involve the building of permanent work tables, shelving, ventilation improvements and needed security devices. Upon completion of this work the greenhouse will be ready for immediate use. 2. Connections How does the project connect with our theme of people, history, and place? How does the project interact with the community? How will you evaluate or assess the community impact? How does the project connect with other NCRCN sites? The Community Greenhouse is for community use, including the school community. This project connects with our theme of people, history and place through an initial activity which will have students growing native plants from seeds and cuttings. When ready for transplanting, the native plants will be used to enhance the community (at school, park, watershed). As stated above, Laytonville School will mentor the project. The project invites student planning and choice as students in the Point Arena High School Construction Class will actually design and build the tables. 3. Student Learning How will the project improve student learning? How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned? What kind of data will you collect? Will you have an Action Research question? How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project? How does the project invite student planning/student choice? How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community? Will your project have a service learning component? If so please describe. The table construction will provide "real life" work opportunities for the Point Arena High School Construction Class. Students at Arena Elementary will have "hands on" experiences with native plant propogation, botany, and experimental educational gardening. Students will be evaluated on the work they produce (tables, plants grown). The impact on the community will be evident by the extent to which the greenhouse is utilized by a variety of community organizations and the beautification of the landscape. Students will share their projects through greenhouse and landscape tours, plant sales and possibly, a community garden. Service learning is imbedded in these projects; after every "hands on" experience students will reflect orally or in written format. 4. Support What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA? What kinds of funds will you need for the project? Please supply a general budget. (Staff development, release time for planning, transportation, materials.) What other sources might provide additional funding for the project? Necessary support from the Teacher on Special Assignment will include: assistance in locating community volunteers and resources, local knowledge, involvement during field trips and coordination between the schools.
