Number of students affected:
12 this semester but by training Pam Amador the class will most likely be offered again in the future

Length of project:
6 months

1. Brief description of the project:

Charles Erwin and Pam Amador will be teaching an on-line C++ computer programming course. The students will work from a textbook and workbook, have access to on-line resources, and develop projects in a class with a small student to teacher ratio.

2. Connections

How does the project connect with our theme of people, history, and place?
How does the project interact with the community?
How will you evaluate or assess the community impact?
How does the project connect with other NCRCN sites?

This project connects with our theme of people and place because we are offering highly marketable skill development in our own community. Hopefully, some of the students will be able to create home/computer based employment which will positively impact the economic viability of our community. We plan to share the successes of this program with the other NCRCN sites and encourage the development of similar programs. Many of the students will continue to share what they learn with the other NCRCN sites via the IDIDO program.

3. Student Learning

How will the project improve student learning?
How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned?
What kind of data will you collect?
Will you have an Action Research question?
How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project?
How does the project invite student planning/student choice?
How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community?
Will your project have a service learning component? If so please describe.

This class was developed from student demand. The students are highly motivated and this class will take their computer literacy to a much higher level. We will assess what the students have learned by what they are able to produce. From the beginning, students were involved in the evolution of this class. Students will have extensive planning and choice in the creation of their projects. As stated above, students will share their projects/learning with other NCRCN sites, most directly through the IDIDO class.

4. Support

What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA?
What kinds of funds will you need for the project? Please supply a general budget. (Staff development, release time for planning, transportation, materials.)
What other sources might provide additional funding for the project?

We request support from the TSA to include: ordering supplies and equipment, writing this project proposal, helping to secure funding, and coordinating sharing with other NCRCN sites. Please see attached budget. We are requesting up to $1000.00 of monetary support. Additional funding will come from the high school budget.
