1. Brief description of the project:
A six week class in basic communication using ASL and Deaf awareness.
2. Connections
How does the project connect with our theme of people, history, and place?
How does the project interact with the community?
How will you evaluate or assess the community impact?
How does the project connect with other NCRCN sites?
Point Arena has three Deaf adult community members who use ASL as their primary mode of communication and would enjoy an increased connection with the community. In addition, senior hearing community members have expressed a strong desire to acquire sign language skills to coomuciate more effectively with our Deaf community members and students. We also are educating two minors with a hearing loss in a mainstream setting who are learning ASL to improve their access to information. PAHS has a total of 15 first- and second-year ASL students (including a deaf student) who need to practice what they are learning in class. Our goal is to make our community a more "user friendly" place to live and/or visit.
3. Student Learning
How will the project improve student learning?
How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned?
What kind of data will you collect?
Will you have an Action Research question?
How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project?
How does the project invite student planning/student choice?
How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community?
Will your project have a service learning component? If so please describe.
While teaching our community members American Sign Language, the Point Arena High School students will cement their knowledge of the language and communication skills. In addition, we will be providing a valuable community service that will promote understanding and community harmony.
4. Support
What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA?
What kinds of funds will you need for the project? Please supply
a general budget. (Staff development, release time for planning, transportation, materials.)
What other sources might provide additional funding for the project?
A room with an easel or blackboard and a VCR and television will be needed. Teaching materials from the PAHS ALS class can be used for instruction. Teacher compensation at $20/hour for 9 hours of instruction, totaling $180.00 funding requested.
Possible additional funding source: Lion's Club
