Project description: Students will work building a mile and a half loop bluff trail between Moat Creek and Whiskey Shoals. The students will learn about sloping, grading, erosion control, putting in culverts and building small bridges.

Connections
  • How does the project connect with our theme of people, history, and place?
  • How does the project interact with the community?
  • How does the project connect with other NCRCN members/ sites?
  • How does the project invite student planning/student choice?
This project connects with our theme of people, history and place by involving students with local conservationist, doing good work in "their place" , thereby giving the students a sense that "I am valuable and do good work in my place", work that will benefit all the citizens of the community. Students build section of Calif. Coastal Trail, creating coastal public access. The participants interact with local community members and employees of the State of California, Department of Parks and Recreation. This project is for the benefit of the entire community. Other NCRCN sites are aware of this project and may duplicate it in their area. Students volunteer for participation in this project and have full choice as to the work that they do. Student Learning
  • How will the project improve student learning?
  • How will you evaluate or assess what students have learned?
  • What kind of data will you collect?
  • How will you evaluate or assess the community impact?
  • How will students share their project and learning with others at their own site, other sites or within the community?
  • How will students be involved in the evaluation of the project?
  • Will your project have a service learning component?

Three written reflections will be collected for each student in the service learning project. One before the project begins, one during the project and one at the end. Students will use the KWL format. What do I KNOW , what do I WANT to know, what have I LEARNED. In addition one "anchor task" will be collected from each student. (An anchor task is a student work product which demonstrates evidence of student's learning of curricular content.)This should be something that is collected by the teacher ordinarily and may be collected during and/or at the end of the project.

This project gives students the opportunity to work on "a real life", practical job. We will evaluate the project by the physical results, the community response and the community use. We will monitor student enthusiasm and pride for the project. One student, Kevin Glaze, will present this project at The Autodesk Foundation's National Project Based Learning Conference. Many students will share what they have learned by speaking before the Coastal Commission.

Support
  • What kind of support would you like from the coordinator/TSA?
  • What kinds of funds will you need for the project?
  • What other sources might provide additional funding for the project?

We need Kim Swenson to arrange the weekly field trips to Moat Creek and to supervise the students while on those trips. We need NCRCN to pay for the vans and to pay for an occasional substitute teacher for Warren Galletti so that he may go work on the Bluff Trail too.
