Introduction

Immerse yourself in this guide to tidepooling adventures along the Mendocino
Coast. Tidepools, which are exposed at low tide, occur within a small strip
of land known as the intertidal zone. Sandwiched between the shore and the
ocean, tidepools are extraordinary, teaming with hundreds of marine organisms.

Photographs of easy to find organisms have been placed into the following areas:

Splash & Spray Zone

High Tide Zone

Mid Tide Zone

Low Tide Zone

Intertidal Birds

The sun and the moon move in cycles affecting the flow and ebb of the tides.
Here in the Pacific, we have two high and low tides of unequal heights each day.
Between each high and low tide there is a time difference of approximately six
hours. Refer to the tide charts in our local newspaper, to determine the best time
to view organisms. Tides below one foot in height are ideal for viewing
organisms in our majestical tidepools.

Please visit the intertidal area with care. You are walking into the habitat of
many organisms. Tread lightly and take only photos so that others who follow
can appreciate the wonders of the intertidal life.
