The Gumboot Chiton is the largest of all chitons. The
body is
covered by a thick, leathery, brick-red flesh. The Gumboot
Chiton may roll into a ball for protection. Unlike most
chitons,
this type does not cling tightly to rocks. Chiton
feed on algae and seaweed.
Habitat/Range: Gumboot Chitons are found attached
to and under
rocks, near seaweed and algae, from Alaska to the Channel
Islands
of Southern California.
