Gliding in groups along the crest of waves, the Brown Pelican is a very large bird. The wingspan of the Brown Pelican is over 6 feet and their body is over 4 feet long. Once endangered due to the effects of the pesticide, DDT, they have now recovered to a population of 100,000 birds in California. Perhaps the most unique feature of this bird is a long bill. Below the bill on the bird's neck is a large pouch, which is used to store fish immediately after catching them.
Habitat/Range: The Brown Pelican feeds in the shallow coastal waters. These birds may venture inland into estuaries and out to sea
