Recycle Everything '97-98!

Mendocino Middle School students involved in the MMS 1998 Recycling Everything! project have made a good start with their recycling program this year. The year began with an overview of trash in society and at school and what we do with it. They learned about solid waste management systems and made a simulated landfill. They learned three concepts reduce, reuse, recycle. Students did an assessment of the amount of food and paper thrown away at the MS, developed a recycling plan for white and colored paper, aluminum, glass, plastic, newpapers, cardboard and magazines at the MS.

They brought recycled materials to the Fort Bragg Recycling Center 1-2 times per month, and documented each trip with writing in a journal. Money from the grant and earned from the aluminum cans helped purchase needed materials for the project including gloves,a heavy duty paper shredder,a spring scale and a subscription to Worm Digest.Information about recycling was shared with the rest of the school student body and staff via the school bulletin.

Over the year, in between rain storms, work progressed on the greenhouse, which is nearing completion. Students had field trips and visited with several people to learn more about recycling, gardening and vermiculture, including Kerry Marshall at the Mendocino Community Gardens, Jan Waters and Henry at Redwood Elementary school in Fort Bragg and Binet Payne and Beth Hogan at Laytonville School. They also videoconferenced with the Eco Patrol group from Anderson Valley, sharing their experiences and ideas on recycling.
