Laytonville Project: Historical Monuments

Laytonville Historical Monument

Project description: This project focuses on the history and the people of the Laytonville area. This dovetails well with the renewed interest in history that has been generated through "The Elder Book Project" and "Elder Luncheons."

Ninth grade English classes, with the mentoring of local muralist Paul Bourgeois, have researched, produced, and placed six large, historical monuments" (as of 2002) around the Laytonville area. More are planned for 2003/2004.

Students are directly involved with interviewing community members, many of them elders, researching, and interacting with business and property owners to find the suitable location for their monuments. This project provides our community with a source of pride, enrichment, and beauty, as well as provide for visitor information.
