Laytonville Project: Feeder Watch

Project description: Classroom Feeder Watch, involving P-5 students and teachers

Length of project: year round.

This project, in conjunction with the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology, will allow students to create a habitat in which several species of local birds can be observed and studied by recording their feeding habits. Connections: Students will observe birds in their local watershed and participate in species studies on campus. Local birding experts will be utilized to share knowledge. Information will be shared with other NCRCN schools through our web site. Students will choose to watch feeders and record data. Students will be responsible for filling and maintaining feeders. Student Learning: Classroom curriculum is available which conforms to National Science Standards. Students use standard scientific procedures to answer their own questions about birds, the depletion of natural habitat and the impact of people on specific species. Students will explore the following questions:

  1. Why are birds important?
  2. What kind of birds visit your classroom feeders?
  3. How many different species live in the area?
  4. How do changes in environment affect feeding habitats?

Students will also learn to identify species by field markings, sound and flight patterns. The service learning component will focus on sustaining habitat in our school environment and community by creating feeding, nesting, and bathing areas throughout our campus. Students will learn how to provide an environment in which people and animals can live together. Students will also participate in cross-age activities such as field studies, maintenance of feeders and recording data.

Written reflection using KWL format will be used. Questions will be posed to students such as "What do you know about birds? What would you like to know about birds? What have you learned about birds?"

The feeder watch curriculum provides assessment activities for each lesson. Both pre assessment and end of inquire reviews are available.

Support: NCRCN coordinator would be asked to provide network support and technology support. We are also requesting the following funds: Bird Seed for 12 months @ 30/month $360. Feeders, field guides, ID charts $200. Field trip to Richardson Bay - 5th graders $400. Materials for nesting boxes built by students $100.

Total $1,060.
