Community Laboratory Night

Project Applicant:
Tammy Lyons, LES/LMS Tech Assistant/Tech Support

Number of Students Affected:
about 30

Length of Project:
November through April (24 weeks), one night a week for 2 hours.

Project Description:
This proposal is for a Computer Night Lab one evening a week for the community. Without an available library, internet cafe, or other source of computers for the community to use, there is a very real need for our citizens to have access to, and train themselves in the use of computers. With so many jobs computer-dependent, it increases the chances of our community members to be hired for available jobs. The lab would be open for two hours, and I would be there to provide technical support. I would like to have 2 students as well available to help with this technical support. This technical support is important to have available to people who may be new to computers, and is a chance for the students to learn tutoring skills and problem-solving.

Connections:
This project will bring our community into our schools, and make connections between students, teachers, and community. For older people without children in school, it will promote a sense of LUSD being "their " school as well as increasing their computer skills.

Student Learning:
Students will increase their self-esteem, tutoring skills, and computer competancy through this project. It is a chance for the student to be the "expert." Student choice is involved because students will have the choice to work one-on-one tutoring an individual (which many adults want) or floating around helping with technical problems. They will have to make decisions and problem-solve about how to best help a community member. Student learning will be evaluated by written student reflections addressing specific questions on an evaluation form completed after their lab time.

Support:
I would like the NCRCN coordinator to write about this project and advertise the open lab in the paper. In addition, I am requesting the following monetary support: salary: $600. (stipend for myself for 48 hours estimated lab time) supplies: $100. (ink cartridges, paper)

Total requested: $700.00
