NCRCN Project: Anderson Valley Water Resource Investigations

Project description: Community member Dr. Carlyle Gray guided students in a multiple-year countywide survey of precipitation levels in the various microclimates. Rain gauges were given to people (or people with existing gauges were located) in twenty-one strategic locations around Anderson Valley.

The gauges are sited on ridges and valleys from the Sonoma County line on 128 to Navarro. Most of these locations are the houses of elementary students. We have aided this process in Laytonville, Mendocino, and Point Arena areas as well. Each year, as the rains began, elementary students collect rainfall data from these locations and make them available to the communities via newspapers and radio stations.

A web site was established in order to display this data in an interactive visual format. Quantitative data on spring and stream flows, as well as water levels in wells is also kept.
