NCRCN Project: Anderson Valley Senior Center Project
Project description: Anderson Valley Elementary School students learn the value of working with their elders at a young age.
Students ranging from second graders to sixth graders have gone to the Anderson Valley Senior Center for many years. In the fall the students meet their senior partners. The students arrive as the seniors are finishing lunch. The kids clear the tables and serve dessert to the elders and then to themselves. Conversation flourishes during dessert. After the dishes are cleared, the students and seniors begin to work on the writing project.
At the end of the year, the students present the finished product to their partners. Students have produced books about what things used to be like in Anderson Valley, about Valley transportation and geography, about the historical buildings of Anderson Valley, and a calendar describing what happens in the Valley during each month.
