NCRCN Project: Anderson Valley Earth & Sky Radio Production ![]()
Project description: Each fall students from Anderson Valley Elementary School work after school with community members, high school students, and school volunteers to research a science-related topic and produce a radio show for the 'Earth & Sky Young Producer's Contest'. 'Earth & Sky' is a 90-second daily radio program that explores the night sky and the wonders of the world. Today it is heard by 4 million listeners weekly on over 700 public and commercial radio stations in all 50 states. 'Earth & Sky' is also heard internationally in 134 countries through Voice of America, The Armed Forces Radio Network, World Radio Network, Radio for Peace International, as well as independent stations in many countries. In the seven years since the contest began, Anderson Valley Elementary students have won three grand prize awards, three first place awards, and two honorable mentions. Competition is always steep in the Young Producers Contest with over 1,000 entrees from around the world competing for five awards. Mike Rhodes, Marketing Director for 'Earth & Sky' said, 'Every year we look forward to getting a package of entries from Anderson Valley Elementary because we know they will have a wonderful assortment of high quality programs. The teachers encourage the students to make great science radio shows, which is a much more difficult task than just writing a science paper. With great teachers and eloquent students the Anderson Valley Elementary team competes every year for our top prizes.' You can log onto www.earthsky.com to learn more about the contest and to listen to and read about our winning entries. |
