

Mendocino is a coastal community located approximately 150 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 1. Families in this community are proud of their ability to take care of themselves; rugged individualism is a trait frequently associated with the local people who are able to survive in this remote, geographically isolated area. At the same time there is a strong sense of commitment to others and the community. The natural beauty of the surroundings and the investment in the creative arts made by local citizens creates an ambiance that gives rise to innovative responses to challenges. According to the 1990 census, 6,211 people live within the 450 square miles of the Mendocino Unified School District (MUSD).The district serves approximately 1,000 students in seven schools. It also has an excellent home study/independent study program.
