

A small town of approximately 1500 people in the heart of redwood country in Northern California, Laytonville is located on Highway 101 in Mendocino County, approximately 175 miles north of San Francisco and twenty miles inland from the communities of Fort Bragg and Mendocino. Laytonville Unified School District serves approximately 600 students P-12, with a Continuation High School and Adult Education Program as well. Fourteen percent of the student body is Native American. The community and schools are supportive and reliant upon each other. The culture of the community is enriched by the involvement of many talented local artists and musicians and the presence of the Cahto Indian Reservation. Overall, a pioneer spirit pervades the community and an independent pride asserts itself in the personality of the local population. Many families have lived in Laytonville for generations and many came with the back-to-the-land movement in the mid-1970s. The goals of the community are sustaining healthy rural life, revitalization of the local economy and dedication to the preservation of the local environment. |
