To support each other in meeting community needs, the four rural school districts in NCRCN formed a network based on the principles of ecoliteracy. They chose the theme "Our Bioregion" to implement place-based service learning projects. MORE... The role of coordinator is vital to the success of the North Coast Rural Challenge Network. The coordinators are currently "Teachers on Special Assignment", freed up from classroom responsibilities to take on the many support tasks crucial to the success of their school district's projects. Started in 1996 with grant funds, NCRCN now involves more than half its teachers and students in project based service learning opportunities that help maintain a sense of place and develop a stronger economic base for our communities.
