Red Abalone
Haliotis rufescens

Once abundant along our coast in great numbers, these exquisite
sea creatures can no longer be easily found due to over-harvesting.
Related to snails, abalone are especially known for their tasty flesh
which is considered a delicacy. Be cautious when trying to pry them
from the rocks; abalone are hemopheliacs. The abalone limit is four
per diver, and the size minimum is eight inches. A license, special
pry bar, and measurement calipers must be
in hand.
Habitat/Range: Sensitive to light, abalone hide under rocks in the surf
zone and out to a depth of 60 feet. Red Abalone can be found in areas
that have a rocky shoreline from Baja California to Sunset Bay Oregon.
