The Oystercatcher is midnight black with a red bill and pink legs. They are often seen feeding on mollusks, marine worms and crustaceans. Their unusually short and thick toes enable them to run swiftly on the slippery rock. Oystercatchers have specialized beaks which are long and narrow, ideal for capturing prey. They learn to hammer or split shells open from their parents. This behavior is passed down from generation to generation.
Habitat/Range: This bird is common along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to Mexico.
