The Leather Star is truly a unique organism possessing
gray
and orange, slimy, soft rays, that often have a garlic
odor.
They feed on Purple Sea Urchins, Sea Anemones, and Sponges.
Sometimes, when a Leather Star makes
contact with a Sea
Anemone, the Sea Anemone will break off the
rock that it is
attached to and creep away. This is in response to a
chemical
that the Leather Star produces.
Habitat/Range: Leather Stars prefer living in
low tide zones,
from Northern California to Baja.
